Custom Counters
Overlays → Browser & Chat → Custom Counters stores named numbers that can appear on overlays and change from GRiMbOS, chat, or Button Box actions.
Create and place a counter
- Click New.
- Enter a Name and click Create.
- Set the starting value, reset value, label, messages, text, and card appearance.
- Click Save.
- Open Overlays → Browser & Chat → Overlay Browser.
- Add the counter object named on the Value tab to a layout.
- Return to Custom Counters and click +1.
- Confirm that the overlay changes without refreshing OBS.
Names may contain up to 128 characters. The optional counter ID must contain 2 to 32 characters. GRiMbOS creates an ID from the name when no ID is supplied. IDs identify counters in commands and overlay objects, so changing the display name does not change the ID.
Value controls
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Current value | Sets the saved number when you click Save. |
| Reset value | Sets the number restored by Reset now and !resetcounter. The default is 0. |
| Show label | Shows or hides the counter name on the overlay. The default is on. |
| -1 | Subtracts 1 immediately. |
| +1 | Adds 1 immediately. |
| Reset now | Restores the reset value immediately. |
| Save | Saves edited values, messages, order, and appearance. |
| Delete | Removes the counter and its overlay registration after confirmation. This cannot be undone. |
The starting current value and reset value are both 0. Counter values are integers. The source does not set a minimum or maximum counter value.

| Command | Result |
|---|---|
!add <amount> <counter> |

!addone <counter> |
Adds 1. |
!total <counter> |

!resetcounter <counter> |

Set command access in Core Commands. Counter lookup accepts an ID or name and can match a partial name. Check the result carefully when counters have similar names.
Messages and stand-ins
The Messages tab controls replies for counter commands. {name} is the counter name and {value} is its current value.
Each counter also has a global key such as {counter_value_deaths}. AI prompts only receive that counter value when the key is included in the prompt.
Appearance
The text and card controls set the font, text color, label layout, background, border, spacing, and transparency. The checkered preview area represents transparent pixels.
Updates, retention, and failures
- Saved changes are pushed to connected overlays. The overlay hub also refreshes values on its normal ticker.
- If the overlay does not change, confirm that the correct counter object is on the active layout.
- If a chat command is denied, check its access setting in Core Commands.
- If a name matches the wrong counter, use the fixed counter ID.
- Counters remain in the database until deleted. The source defines no automatic reset by Stream Session and no automatic retention period.
