Chat Overlay
Open Overlays > Browser & Chat > Chat Overlay to set the appearance and filters for chat shown in OBS.
Chat Overlay has two independent objects:
| Object | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Vertical Chat Box | Stacks Chat Messages at the top or bottom of a box. |
| Horizontal Ticker | Moves Chat Messages across one line from left to right or right to left. |
Assign either object in Overlays > Browser & Chat > Overlay Browser > Layout. The layout placement sets the embedded object's size.
Vertical Chat Box
Set New lines, Max lines, Fade, and Row spacing. Max lines accepts 3 to 100. Fade accepts 0 to 600 seconds, where 0 means messages do not fade. Row spacing accepts 0 to 48 pixels.
Standalone width accepts 200 to 1200 pixels. It applies only to the standalone /overlay/chat page. It does not change an object embedded in an Overlay Browser layout.
Horizontal Ticker
Set Direction, Speed, and Separator. Speed accepts 20 to 2000 pixels per second. The separator appears between Chat Messages.
Appearance
Each chat object has its own appearance settings:
- Transparent or solid background, with color and opacity.
- Optional border, with color, width, and corner size.
- Font, size, bold text, and text color.
- Optional text border and text border color.
- Twitch username colors.
- Twitch badge icons.
- Twitch user avatars.
Use the preview on each tab to inspect unsaved changes. Click Save to send the settings to connected overlays.
Filters
The Filters tab applies to both objects.
Hide lines that start with ! removes command lines from the overlay. Omitted users removes every Chat Message from each listed login. Use Add and Remove to maintain the list.
There is no message template. The overlay draws incoming Chat Messages after these filters.
Test and verify
- Keep the OBS scene containing the chat object visible.
- Open the Filters tab.
- Click Send test line.
- Confirm the sample line appears in the assigned object.
- Click Save after changing settings.
Testing boundary: Send test line publishes a sample only to the overlay system. It does not send a Chat Message to Twitch and does not prove that Twitch chat ingestion is working.
If the test does not appear, confirm the matching object is visible in the layout, confirm OBS uses the current overlay URL, and refresh the Browser Source cache. If live Chat Messages still do not appear, check the Twitch connection in System > Connection Status and review the Filters tab.
